Although e-scooters are widely available to purchase, they remain illegal to use on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes and pedestrian-only areas unless they are part of an approved rental scheme.
As there are currently no legal schemes operating in Telford & Wrekin, e-scooters may only be used on private land with the permission of the landowner.
Under current Government legislation, e-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) and are subject to the same legal requirements as motor vehicles, including insurance, tax, MOT certification, licensing and registration.
However, there is currently no practical mechanism in place for private e-scooter users to obtain these requirements, meaning their use in public spaces remains unlawful.
Anyone found riding an e-scooter illegally in a public area risks having it seized by police.
